Someone to Watch Over Me

Rate this book
Fall in love with The Thorntons, a family filled with sexy alpha males, passionate women, and lots of heart, all set in a delightful small town in the Pacific Northwest.

After his last tour in the Marines, Seth Thornton finds himself adrift when he returns to Fair Haven, Washington. A capable soldier who moved up the ranks, Seth struggles to find his place in a town he once called home as the memories of war continue to haunt him—until the day he encounters the beautiful Rose DiMarco.

Seth saves Rose when a man accosts her, yet to his surprise, she spurns his help. Her beauty and her headstrong ways captivate him, and he can’t forget about her. When Rose becomes his new neighbor, she suddenly presents a temptation that the normally aloof Seth cannot resist. He wants her more than he’s ever wanted any woman.

Rose DiMarco fled Seattle to escape from an ex-boyfriend who made her life hell. Fair Haven is supposed to be her haven, but her ex isn’t about to let her go. When he threatens her, she never expects her sexy new neighbor Seth to defend her and declare himself her protector.

And she definitely doesn’t expect to long for Seth in every possible way: she wants his kiss, his embrace, his caress. His love. But as Rose’s ex-boyfriend vows to divulge all of her darkest secrets, she fears that Seth will never look at her the same way again when he knows the truth. While Rose must confront her demons, Seth must choose between returning to the horrors of war—or embracing a love that could set him free...

This series on the Thornton family is great, but this may be my favorite book so far. Morland really kicks things up a notch with . . . well, everything. More heart tugging, more steam and more conflict. This time both of the main characters have a major conflict they're dealing with. Rose has a truly horrible ex that can’t seem to leave her alone, and Seth is trying to find his place in the world while dealing with a load of guilt and PTSD since his last deployment.

One of the things I love about interconnected stand alone books is getting to catch up with characters from previous books, and Morland does a great job of giving enough information on them without spoilers, so it's not critical to read the books in order. I really loved Seth and Rose, and it was great to see them grow stronger from being together while still working things out on their own. I think it gives us characters we can admire, and perhaps emulate in real life. I wholeheartedly recommend this entertaining, touching, inspiring book, and I can’t wait to read Heath and Jubilee's story next!

Emotional roller-coaster romantic journey with a beautifully broken and sweetly engaging couple unexpectedly finding each other and a way to heal some of their past.

Seth Thornton is an ex-Marine that is now home trying to build a life while living with the nightmares of his past. Rose DiMarco is sweet and shy, she moves in next door and is also trying to star a new life living with her own nightmares. Their journey is so heartbreaking, emotional and real. Beautifully written romantic journey of healing and true love.

I liked this book. We're drawn right into Seth's PTSD, and are quickly introduced to Rose's (though he's takes longer to determine the cause). The suspense builds with both facing problems as the romance grows. The plot's well done, the characters well developed.

Sex: multiple scenes
Language: 25 F words, 55 Lord's name in vain, 18 S words
Violence: threats, gun aimed, gunshots, knife fight
Cliffhanger: no
Do I need to read books before this one: it is a little confusing, so yah
Would I read more of the series: yes

----SUMMARY----
Seth Thornton suffers from PTSD, plus he doesn't know what to do with his life now that he's out of the military. He takes a walk, helps Rose DiMarco haul a chair into her new apartment, next door to his. He'd met her a month ago; he'd intervened at The Fainting Goat when someone grabbed her. She didn't appreciate it. He's been going back there, hoping to see her again. He helps move the rest of her stuff; no bed, clothes, or knickknacks, but 5 boxes of well-loved books. She has beautiful eyes; then they flicker in fear.

Rose's ex, Jimmy Porter, had sent the guy who attacked her at the bar. She moved here to escape men who want to use her for their gain and pleasure. She doesn't want to be a gazelle to Seth's panther. She'd avoided waiting on him at the Goat since that night. She doesn't like charity or being treated like a princess. She'll rescue herself. He invites her for drinks. She doesn't date, PTSD. But she almost says yes when her brother comes in. Seth has met Heath before at drinks with his brothers; he's a friend to Harrison and especially his wife, Sara, helping her when she started at the school where they teach. Seth leaves, carves a hummingbird.

Heath provided for Rose after their parents died. While she was in college, she met Johnny. Heath got arrested for drug trafficking; Johnny said he'd make it go away if she stayed with him. She left after a year as his prisoner, has been saving money to pay Johnny back with interest, and she's close. She got Callie for protection. Heath warns her away from Seth because his brothers said he came back different. He leaves. Her safe has a ring from Mom, a watch from Dad, the money, her passport, and a gun.

Seth visits Lizzie, his twin, and her infant, Bea. He shudders at the thought of colic. Alan wants him to work full-time with him. At home, he hears loud noises next door, knocks on Rose's door. She opens, aiming a gun.

Rose has a long shift. When she goes home she smells Johnny's clove cigarettes by her apartment. She has her hand on her gun in her jacket. He doesn't want the money, he wants her. She pulls out the gun, You'll have your money soon. He takes the gun, gives her 2 weeks before he claims her. She goes home, slams doors and cupboards. Seth knocks. She aims.

After he talks her calm and empty handed, he drinks pink wine with her, asks what it's all about. None of your business. Is it about Heath? Ex boyfriend. That guy last month? No, Johnny. Cops? No, it's about Heath, too. I'll protect you.

She doesn't want another man controlling her. I'm not interested in controlling you; I’m here because you were so scared that you pointed a gun at me. She wants to tell him what she'd done to save her brother, but doesn't want rejection.

Rose is working. Trent is the owner, Rose holds Bea while Lizzie complains at Trent because it's date night. Heath comes with a couple of Seth's brothers, Harrison and Caleb. Sara (Harrison's), Megan (Caleb's), and Jubilee (youngest Thornton) come, too. Jubilee spills water on Heath (obvious interest on both sides). Rose takes him a towel, laughs as she parrots Be careful of those Thorntons.

Sean's outside when she gets home. He asks if she always carries her gun, impressed she knows how to handle it, is this how you're living the rest of your life? Why do you care? I don't know, but you feel it, too. Kisses.

Seth hates dreams. This time, he watches Max explode a land mine, but it's Rose he watches die before he wakes. He goes to the workshop, finishes a table leg. Alan's impressed. Then his CO, Sgt Loyd, calls with an offer that'd make him a sergeant. But what about protecting Rose?

Rose dreams of the day she accepted Johnny's offer. “Your end of the deal is this: you’re mine to do with what I want. You don’t get to say no, because then I’ll have your brother arrested again and thrown in jail for the rest of his life.” She wakes, watches Bob Ross. She falls asleep, has a sex dream with Seth.

Rose meets Heath for breakfast at Megan's shop, The Rise and Shine. Jubilee serves them. Rose asks What's up with you and her. Nothing, even if it's something. Hours later, Heath walks her home. They run into Seth. They're stiff with each other. She goes in. Heath: Stay away, she's been through enough already. I just got her back; don't make her run again. Heath goes in. Seth goes to the park. Lizzie finds him. His darkest fear is being good only for killing people.

Rose plays catch with Callie at the park. She starts walking home, no one's around. She hears a twig snap, aims her gun. Johnny. He knocks gun away, wraps an arm around her throat. Who's the guy kissing you? Callie attacks. She gets her gun, escorts him to car, Get out of town. As she falls asleep that night, she knows she has to tell Seth, no matter how humiliating, because he's been threatened. She has erotic dreams about Seth, who turns into Johnny. She wakes screaming. She vomits. Seth knocks, she lets him in, he's wearing only boxers. I have nightmares, too. Tell me what's going on.

She doesn't want to talk. He tells her about his last tour. His guilt about Max's wife and baby. She makes him promise not to yell, then tells him everything. She trembles so much, he pulls her into his lap. He promises to protect them both. Kiss me, Seth; make me forget. "She wanted something good. Something bright and clean and lovely. She wanted to be wanted for herself for once." He gives her pleasure, she cries and asks to be alone. He kisses her, hurt, and leaves.

The Thorntons celebrate Caleb's birthday and promotion on a boat. Heath came, Rose didn't. Seth talks to Bea about Rose. Lizzie asks what he was talking about, he tells her about Sgt Loyd. Harrison and Sara announce pregnancy. Caleb's advice: "Don’t make the same mistakes I did. I almost lost the woman I loved—for what? Pride? Not worth it, believe me."

Rose hears Seth scream from a nightmare. She goes over. He doesn't want to talk. She sees the hummingbird; You can have it. She gives him pleasure. After, he kisses her, tugs her hair, she has a panic attack. Leaves.

She's working, he and family come. He confronts her, she promises to tell him tomorrow. Your promises are worth less than nothing lately. I can't talk about it here. They ignore each other. Lizzie and Bea arrive. Rose melts watching Seth hold Bea, sees herself marrying him, placing their baby in his arms. He sees her, she thinks he knows what she was thinking.

Heath's home was broken into--nothing taken, just messed up. Rose knows it's Johnny. She tells Heath everything, including the rape. He gives his approval of Seth. You can't let fear rule your life.

She thinks about it in bed, hears Seth next door. She primps, knocks. How many times are we gonna do this? I told you I'd tell you what's going on. You don't have to. What's not complicated is that I want you. They start to make love, she panics before penetration. He gives her space; she worries she's going to faint in front of the man she loves. Rose, you're scaring me. Can I be in charge? Yes. They make love, then he carries her to bed and falls asleep with her. She cries (doesn't know why), then panic rears again. She rinses her face, brushes her teeth so it feels normal, then climbs back into bed and sleeps.

They make love in the morning. She gets dressed for work, Johnny calls, Meet me Saturday far away; don't tell anyone. She's a mess at work. After, she hears a noise, pulls her gun. It's Seth. He walks her home. She tells him everything (except Saturday); he will kill Johnny. I was afraid you'd hate me for it. You’ve gone through so much, yet you’re still so kind and lovely; you’re the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. He asks to make love to her. They do. Then Callie noses him in the butt! They talk late into the night; he doesn't tell her about possibly another tour. He realizes he loves her.

She wakes up to him on the phone, promising an answer. After breakfast, he tells her. It sends her to a dark place, where she's always alone. If you were going to say no, you would’ve already. She walks Callie.

Seth messes up a third table leg thinking the people he loves die when Alan asks what's going on. He tells him. A: What do you want? Do you want to be sergeant or are you running from something/someone?

Seth takes Rose to his family's Fourth celebration. After watching her do sparklers with Sara's son, James, he almost blurts I love you. Then fireworks. He lasts a while, then runs. Rose follows, finds him in his room. At one point she touches him, he shoves her onto the floor. When he comes to himself, he's aghast. Then the clan comes in. Lisa cries, Seth yells to get out, Abby shoos them all out except Rose and examines him. Rose drives him home, stays with him. He thinks he could've hurt Rose badly; he's been fooling himself, he's good for nothing but war. He tells her he's decided to do the 4th tour, and if he doesn't come back, oh well. She yells at him, What we have is nothing? Say it to my face! Say you don't love me. Because I love you so much you're breaking my heart! You can't love me. You're a coward, afraid of what we have, running toward your death. She leaves, won't be back.

She does dishes, gets ready for bed, can't sleep, panic attack, sobbing. "This hurt more than what Johnny had done to her because she knew Seth cared for her. Loved her, even. Yet he’d turned his back on her when she’d made herself vulnerable and confessed her feelings." Callie brings her the hummingbird, Rose sobs asleep.

She goes to meet Johnny, sends Heath her location before she loses cell service. She gives Johnny the money, he won't let her go. She aims the gun at him. You can kill me, but I have Jubilee; come with me, she's free. He throws her in a room in the cabin, We don't have Jubilee.

Jubilee takes cupcakes to Seth. So, do you love her? Yes, doesn't matter. Of course it does, she loves you too! Seth tells her about Loyd's offer, fight with Rose. “Love sucks, but it also makes you a better person. I’ve seen how you are around Rose. We all have. It’s like you’ve come back to yourself.” Maybe I can make a life here. Maybe I can be the man Rose thinks I am.

Heath bangs on the door, Rose is missing! Seth loads weapons and ammo. "Heath, find Caleb, and take Jubi with you. She can help."

Rose calms, remembers self defense class, gets herself untied from chair. As she's getting out window, Johnny pulls her back in. He touches her skin, she fights, bashes chair over his head. She gets out the window, runs parallel to path. Seth gets her. Jubilee is safe. He tells her he loves her. Kiss. Johnny +4 surround them. Seth tells her to run as soon as 2 behind them aren't looking. He eases away from her, taunts Johnny, You force yourself on women and abuse them because you can't get them any other way. Your leader is a coward. What does it feel like, taking commands from a guy who’s so pathetic that women literally run away from him? Johnny loses it, attacks, Rose runs, guys can't shoot Seth without risking Johnny. Seth gets him in a sleeper hold, then Johnny has a knife to his throat. Seth grabs the knife by the blade, tosses. Caleb and other cops arrive. Rose runs into his arms. She bandages his hand. “You idiot. What were you thinking?” “I was thinking that as long as you were safe, I didn’t care what happened.” “Well, I care what happens to you. And you’re never doing something so moronic ever again.” That made him smile. “Of course, princess.” She sniffed. “And don’t you forget it.”

They get home at dawn after the hospital and giving statements. He tells her she's his everything, he's not going on another tour. She weeps. They promise each other to not get in danger again. They make love before sleeping.

She dresses as a hummingbird for Harrison's and Sara's Halloween party; he goes as nudist on strike. She's moved in with him. Seth told the Marines no and Alan yes to full-time. Alan, childless, will leave him the carpentry business. She's returning to college in January. Johnny's in jail because it's safer; people are after him. Seth and Rose are seeing therapists for PTSD. Heath has been distant since finding out about what Johnny had done to Rose. At the party, Caleb and Megan announce they're pregnant. Seth tells Rose he wants all of it--marriage, babies, a life. She sees Jubilee, wants to get her together with Heath, then remembers the lock of hair Johnny showed her to prove he had Jubilee. Johnny must've gotten it from Heath's home!

Jubilee is giving herself a pep talk about Heath. She finds him outside, asks him out, he says no. She kisses him, he passionately returns it, then tells her it can never be.

Rose and Seth find that there is no greater healer than love. Rose doesn't regret the decision she made to save her brother from a punishment he didn’t deserve that could derail his dream. Even though it meant putting herself in the hands of amoral devil like Johnny, she would do it hundred time over for Heath, who has done nothing but sacrifice for her since their parents passing. Now finally free from Johnny's clutches she is just trying to get some semblance of her life back and hopefully move on. When she moves to Fair Haven to be closer to Heath she hopes it will a chance to finally break the chains with Johnny once and for all, but he and his lackeys have other plans. When fending off one of Johnny's overzealous thugs a white knight shows up to lend a hand... Seth Thornton. While she appreciates the gesture, she doesn't need his aid and rightly tells him so leaving her savior in her dust only to see him again when she is moving into her new apartment as her brand new neighbor. Seth has been feeling directionless and not to mention haunted since his last tour ended. He is basically a shell of his former self and its apparent to everyone in his life. When he comes across a seemingly damsel in distress he jumps into action only to find that she isn’t one to swoon into his arms in gratitude. When she becomes his newest neighbor he is overcome with a need to discover more about this mysterious lady. It soon becomes apparent that like him she is troubled with ghosts that need a gentle hand and he wants to be the person that she confided in and protects her from whatever she is so afraid of. With Rose he finds a desire to rejoin society, but will he be able to keep her safe from the ghosts that linger in her past and her present?

Two damaged people. One with a major secret. The writing to get them from the beginning of their story to the end was so-so for me.

And so many characters to keep track of! Although I haven't read the previous books in this series, and this story stands alone just fine, the unfamiliarity with all the other people populating the story threw me off more than once.

What really bothered me was Rose's will she/won't she, her romantic inconsistent treatment of Seth. And how she never trusted anyone to help her with the villain, or to even confide in them about him. I ended up not respecting her or her decisions.

Overall, the story was okay for me, but not enough that I would read any of the other books.

I love the Thorntons! I’m a little grumpy with myself for skipping over Lizzie’s book, but Seth was just so irresistible. This was an emotional roller-coaster ride of a story. Seth and Rose are both carrying a lot of baggage from past tragedies. So much that I was a little afraid they would sabotage their chance at a happy ever after to a point that they couldn’t recover from. But I loved watching how vulnerable they were able to get with one another. I can’t wait to read more about this family.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.

This was another great read in the series. Although, I'm not surprised because this family is awesome. In this we have Rose and Seth. Both are going through some things. Seth spent a long time in the military. Now that he is done he doesn't know what to do with himself. He meets Rose and needless to say his life got more exciting. I enjoyed this couple and look forward to seeing her brother's story next.

Someone to Watch Over Me is the fifth book in the Thorntons series, and part of the Love Everlasting universe. Rose has moved to be closer to her brother, but she’s holding a bunch of dark secrets close to her heart. Seth is her neighbor, a veteran suffering with his guilt and memories, not sure what to do with himself, and only feeling calm when he’s with Rose. As her past still haunts her present, Seth is determined to keep her safe, but when he pushes her away, can Rose save herself?

Wow, this was definitely an emotional book with a sweet and steamy romance and a lot of darker drama all to keep me flipping through the pages! I was so enthralled with Rose and Seth’s romance and I loved the push and pull, the fear, and how their pasts helped to influence the beginning of their relationship. Rose was so brave and strong, wanting to save everyone, but she felt so broken from her past decisions. Seth felt just as broken from his survivor’s guilt after his last tour, but I loved that pieces of him slowly came back to life the longer that he spent with Rose. While they were both running, I loved that they crashed into each other in a beautiful mess. The drama in the book kept me on the edge of my seat at times, but I loved the ending! It was fun to see previous couples in this book, but I think this book could stand alone just fine. This has been a great series so far, and I loved reading Seth’s romance!

Rose is a sweet woman in a world of nightmares and loneliness. Seth is a Marine home from his third tour after losing his best friend. He also lives in a world of nightmares and loneliness. The first time he met her he tried to save her from her ex. The second time is when she moves in the apartment down from him. She only has one chair she moves in, and he has questions but does not push anything. They both have nightmares for different reasons every night. Their siblings are very worried about them. They manage to fall in love with one another through all the chaos that surrounds them. Rose finally comes clean with Seth about what and who happened in her past. He vows to protect her! When her past comes knocking and she has to repay her debt…what will happen? Will they get to her in time to save her? Will they all come out alive? Will they have their HEA? I loved how the author makes PTSD in this book realistic to the characters. The hero is definitely all male, but she also makes him realistic with the fighting scenes. I received this book via Booksprout and am leaving a voluntary review.

I really enjoyed this romance between Seth Thornton and Rose DiMarco, two broken people with nightmarish fears and difficulty in escaping the pains of their individual pasts. The writing is good, the plot has suspense and action along with the developing romance and passion. Plus, a villain with no redeeming qualities!

I did think that the "mysterious terrible secret" in Rose's past was a bit overblown. Tragic and traumatic yes, but hiding away from her remaining family for years because of it?

Seth is surrounded by a large, supportive family who are the basis of the series and weave in and out of his story. The Thornton family, partners and children, as they multiply, can be a little difficult to keep straight, particularly if you have not read all of the prior books in the series.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

This book was a little hard for me, you have Rose who is struggling with starting over after an abusive ex, yet she isn't really starting over as she continues to let him dictate her life, never seeking or getting help.

Seth is an ex-Marine struggling with PTSD. While I liked that they helped each other through their issues, it was a little too much push/pull of a relationship, it came across as very immature. I also just don't like portraying abuse in a way that promotes the issues surrounding not getting proper help, it feels like it further stigmatizes getting help. Just my opinion though.

I loved the story of Seth and Rose. He was damaged by the war, and she by a relationship with a psycho. This has to be my favorite book in the Thornton series so far. I appreciated the fact that the author spent some time on the subject of fireworks and how they are a trigger for some returning veterans. She also did a really good job with Rose and the problems she had with intimacy regarding the past trauma she suffered. I spent the whole book just wanting them to see that they were perfect for each other in their imperfections. Plus, you still got to have the rest of the Thornton's involved so it was nice to have updates on everyone. Thanks for another great book!

Seth Thorton, inactive duty marine, recovering from war injuries is drawn to Rose DeMarco at first sight.
Rose is running from a horrible past and the man responsible, but something about Seth.....
If you want a contemporary romance with family, reality and angst, love, bits of humor, hawt men and steamy love scenes...this is it.
I happily received an Arc to peruse gratis as I have read the whole series so far and look forward to Jubi's tale.

Out of all the Thorntons' stories I think I wanted to read Seth's the most. Someone broken finding a purpose and a companion fills me with hope and happiness. When he came across Rose, someone just as broken as him, it was like someone ignited a spark, something deep inside that couldn't be extinguished. Through all their confusing stops and starts that spark remained and when they finally let down their walls enough, they fed it and it grew to become not just a fiery passion, but a blaze of love.

A bit too flowery of a description? Yeah, I thought so too. But imagery aside, that's kind of what it was. More than a passing interest remained within Seth despite not seeing her often and with all of his protective instincts, as well as his libido, being turned on he couldn't help but want to stick close to her. Once she finally let him in, though, his demons well and truly caught up with him and he made the mistake of trying to turn her away.

Even though she could mentally understand what Seth was doing and why, it didn't make it any easier, especially when her past caught up with her and was set to trap her. I liked Rose's fierce nature but she was impulsive and lacked the foresight enough to actually protect those around her. She didn't actually grow up through all the years on the run, but she grew wary enough to arm herself with skills and knowledge. That I respected and admired. It's when it's a choice between her or someone else that she doesn't see how there could be any other option that makes her revert back to the naive 20 year old that Johnny trapped in the first place. When worse came to worst for her though, she used her brain and was determined to survive and I grew to truly love her character.

Rose and Seth together were a good match and I was really happy to read that they both sought outside help once all the drama died down. Throughout the story they were tossed from passion to nothing and back again, then from crises to crises. There weren't a lot of moments where they shared all the little things that are important in getting to know someone. Without that I wasn't sure that I would believe their lasting love by the end of the book but with all the craziness out of the way they could finally catch up on all that made them who they were. The big stuff was revealed like strength, tenacity, passion, intensity, values, but the little things that made them unique and specifically them wasn't learned until later. They were allowed to grow as individuals and to grow closer together as well. Finding healing in one another and encouragement to seek outside help to make that healing more permanent.

Overall, this was a tender story with more than enough drama in their individual lives to last a lifetime. They were well on their way to their own HEA and I'm excited to see how they progress through Jubilee and Heath's own frustrating journey.

Read and willingly reviewed this ARC for the author.

Iris Morland's Someone to Watch Over Me is my fourth The Thorntons book. I will admit that I didn't read Book 4, but it is sitting in my Kindle Library waiting for a read. That's good for most readers, as it means you can read each book in this series, including this one, without having read the other books. It does help, however, give you some background on the ancillary characters, but it isn't necessary.

This story follows Seth and Rose. Seth is the fourth brother of the Thorton Men and the twin to Lizzie (her story is told in Book 4). Seth is a military man. He has come off of three tours of duty, and he's struggling to find his place in Fair Haven and his family. While he has wood-working skills, he isn't sure that he can be anything more than a soldier. This is the conundrum of his story.
Rose is a woman who works in the local tavern, and she lives next door to Seth. At the end of Book 4, Seth and Rose connect, and their story begins. Unfortunately, Rose is harboring a dangerous secret from her past that is very much affecting her present life. Her secret seems to get in the way of her relationships, even her relationship with her brother.
The pasts of Seth and Rose both unite and trouble their relationship. Their struggle is the focus of this story.

I have to be honest about this book. It took me a bit to "buy" into the connection between Rose and Seth. It is possible I didn't feel the connection as poignantly as I had in the other books because I didn't read the fourth book and missed the beginning of their relationship. I'm not sure, but I didn't immediately "read" the chemistry between Seth and Rose. As the book progressed, it grew on me. However, in the whole of the series to date, this book is my least favorite. Given Seth's background, I was hoping to be more emotionally connected to him, but it took me quite a while to warm up to him.

This book has an HEA, but readers have to contend with some angst to get there. There will be moments when you find yourself yelling at Rose and Seth in their unwillingness to be vulnerable with each other, and it is frustrating. However, everything works out in the end just as you expect in an Iris Morland book.

Overall, this is a four-star read.

Rose DiMarco is almost free. Just a few hundred more dollars, and her debt and her ex will go away, she hopes. Prays. Because she can’t take the constant looking over her shoulder. All she wants is distance from the man who has made her life hell forward the past seven years. He’s ruined enough things for her, and she’s ready to reclaim her life. And perhaps love again. Especially if it’s with the handsome Marine who so happens to be her neighbor. If only he weren’t so infuriating and sexy. (Or ... infuriatingly sexy? Whichever it is.)

Someone to Watch Over Me was a nice book. I wasn’t as crazy about it as the first in series, but it was still good. It was great to catch up with other characters, especially since I skipped over all the other Thornton siblings (except Jubilee).

The plot, like the others in the series, centered primarily around the relationship drama “will-they-won’t-they” trope. It was unique and fun the first time around, but I’m glad I didn’t read the rest of the volumes if this is how it was for the other novels. That’s a personal preference, though.

I thought Rose was okay as the heroine. I could root for her, but I didn’t feel as invested in her. I liked Seth, and God bless him for his patience. He was pretty consistent throughout his ARC. Although they were both stubborn as heck.

I was left dissatisfied with the climax of the story. Particularly the scenes involving weapons. As a novice writer, I learned, “don’t introduced a gun unless you’re going to use it.” And I felt like it just fell on to a plot device instead of any real heightened tension. Even the antagonist explained as much. :/

My main confusion is why Rose reacted the way she did the multiple times she seduced Seth, only to reject him at the end. As someone who’s gone through trauma, I try my best not to judge how others react, including fictional ones. But, this left me puzzled nonetheless. The book didn’t really answer this adequately, IMO.

Decent premise. Terrible execution.

Seth and Rose. A story of 2 people who always make the worst decision possible. These 2 characters are truly stupid. Seth is like every other "hero" in that he forces his way into Rose's life. Refuses to respect her words when she tells him she doesn't want to go out with him or asks him to leave her apartment. He feels entitled to her, her home, her secrets because he's attracted to her and wants to have sex with her. He makes demands of her. Won't take no for an answer. Is physically abusive to her on 2 separate occasions. She is clearly dealing with issues related to sex but he doesn't care and decides that his sexual release is worth the consequences. Real stand up guy here. Rose isn't much better. She is fine as a person but consistently does the dumbest things. Gets a gun. Won't use it. Meets with her rapist repeated but won't tell the cops or even her brother. Thinks that if she pays him off he'll go away even though he flat out tells her he doesn't want her money and makes it clear that if she doesn't come back with him that he'll kill her friends and family. She still sticks to the money idea. So stupid. There is a lot of sex. They fall in love despite their only connection being that they both have PTSD. Neither of these characters are ready for a relationship. Ultimately though the book fails because it just isn't fun to read. The characters are sad all the time. Seth's dive into self pity near the end of the book cements that. Just sadness, sex and bad decisions. I'll pass on any other books in this series.

If you are looking for a clean, sweet small-town romance, you'll want to pass on this one. While it does take place in a small town, that's about the only part of it that fits that description. Even if you do decide that this book is for you, I would definitely suggest reading the previous books in the series in order. I hadn't read the previous books, and I was confused throughout the book.

Seth and Rose's relationship seems to be about 95%+ based on sexual attraction. They don't know each other really at all, and Rose is supposedly very apprehensive about pursuing a romantic or sexual relationship again after her previous traumatizing relationship, but she's more than eager to have sex with Seth pretty much right away. On that note, there were several overly descriptive sex scenes where I ended up skipping ahead several pages.

This book also has a lot of swearing. I'd say that the f-bomb is dropped probably close to 20 times, and just about every other swear word that you can think of is used several times throughout the book as well. Overall, this really isn't the sort of book that I enjoy. I probably should have read some of the other reviews before reading it. Then I would have realized that it had a lot of sex scenes and swearing and not a lot of meat to the story. I would not recommend it.

Wow this book was amazing. Each time I have read a book in the Thornton's series I think that there is no way that the next one can get any better. I have to say I am wrong because I have absolutely loved every single book in this series but I have to say by far this is my favorite. There was just something about Seth and Rose. Both of them are so broken by tragic things that have happened to them in their pasts. Even thou they try being together it does not take the demons away completely. This book is full of so much sadness but also so much love that it overwhelmed me a lot of the time. From the moment I picked up this book I could not put it down. In a matter of hours I had started and finished this amazing book. The only thing I could think of when I was finished was OMG when is the next one coming out? I am 100% certain that Heath and Jubille's story is going to blow this one right out of the water, even when this book was amazing. Iris has done a fabulous job on this series and I am so looking forward to reading more. I can promise you this. That this book is 5 stars and once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down. I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for a honest review.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.

Seth is floundering after serving for years in the Marines. His last mission didn't end well and he is suffering from PTSD. He is intrigued by Rose, but she pushes him away time and again. Rose is hiding a secret that she believes will have Seth running from her if he finds out. She is also suffering from PTSD, in my opinion, and doesn't trust easily. I believe the issue of PTSD is dealt with in a very realistic way in this book. When Rose and Seth become neighbors, it is only a matter of time before they stop denying their attraction to each other. Just when they start believing they might have a future together, her past comes roaring back and he has an offer that will put him back in harms way. Two people who have experienced horrific things in their life find themselves in the thick of a dangerous situation that just might tear them apart for good. Will Seth be able to save himself, as well as, Rose or will his belief that he isn't good enough for her stop him from fighting for his happiness? Will Rose make the ultimate sacrifice before she has a chance to experience true love? A must read that lives you on the edge of your seat wondering what exactly is going on with her brother Heath and his sister Jubie.

Seth Thornton had been a Marine, but was out now after his third tour and living in Fair Haven, Washington. He had been in Afghanistan and lost his best friend there. He still is having nightmares and doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. He met Rose DiMarco a month ago and was attracted, but hasn't seen her in awhile. He runs into her when she is moving in to the apartment next to him. She is standoffish, but at times she acts like she is attracted. She had some terrible things happen to her in the past and also has nightmares.

It was so sad to see what they both had gone through and how it emotionally affected each of them. I loved it at they both understood somewhat what the other was going through. I always enjoy catching up with the characters I met in previous books. The Thornton brothers and sisters and so good about supporting each other, even if they get on each other's nerves at times! I was hoping someone would do something to Johnny who was Rose's ex and an evil person. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

I think I read this a few years back but I don’t remember when. But I vividly remember the details for some reason. Goodness.

Seth and Rose both have traumatic pasts that they’re both trying to run from. Rose is running away from them and Seth is reliving them. But both of them found each other and no matter how hard Rose kept from trying to get herself to open up to Seth, she couldn’t help herself from falling for Seth.

Honestly this was a cute read and I did enjoy it. It’s definitely not a fluffy read by all means but I think it was nice. Mainly because I remember details of this story.

I read this through the short story compilation of Long Live The King Anthology: Fifteen Steamy Contemporary Royal Romances by Skye Warren.

This is only the second book I have read by this author, and once again, I am amazed by her talent.
Seth Thornton is an inactive Marine, back home , at a loss of what he’s going to do with his life and suffering from survivor’s guilt and PTSD. Rose DiMarco, is a survivor of abuse, still dealing with her past andd who’s moved to Fair Haven to be close to her brother. Seth helped her when she was being harassed by a man.
Imagine her surprise when she realizes he’s her next door neighbor. A friendship develops as well as the attraction. But both are struggling with everyday life, and the restless nights.
Aside from offering an engaging plot and well developed characters, the story is more than that. A reminder not only of the struggles that the returning troops suffer, whether physical, emotional or psychological but also of the effects of domestic abuse . At times heartbreaking but also heartwarming story .
I was entrusted this copy by Hidden Gems. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Rose made several terrible mistakes when she was younger and is still paying the price emotionally and physically. She says those experiences made her more mature in contrast to her younger, naive self, but none of her actions support this. She should have involved the police when the deception was discovered, as well as the continued harassment. Then she continues to compound her naivety by continuing contact, listening to the abuser, not going to the police, and not telling anyone what is going on. Without the balance of Seth, I may not have read much further. Seth is a wonderful man torn apart by his experiences in the Marines and the difficult transition to civilian life. Problems with his character deal with the military information. Marines are only Marines, they would NEVER refer to themselves as Soldiers-those are Army only. CO = Commanding Officer and would never be an enlisted person, they would be an Officer. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

For me, this book had the appeal of a supermarket sugar cookie. It was fine and I enjoyed myself while it lasted but afterwards there was a film of something unsavoury in my mouth and I wanted a palette cleanser.

This book awkwardly straddles the gap between romance novels that are good on their own merits and romance novels that are bad enough to become unintentionally delightful. This book was not good, nor was it bad, nor was it delightful. It wasn’t really even memorable: I only read it a few days ago and I would be hard pressed to remember a single thing about it.

I would like to clarify that I am not only criticizing the writing and plot of the book; it has about the same sex appeal as a fake plant. It is cleverly impersonating the real thing, but it will always ring false.

In summary: I’m not saying this is a bad book but it’s definitely not a good book. The novel is an exercise in mediocrity and should be approached as such.

Iris once again invites the reader into the Thorntons family.
Seth the other twin, has returned after three tours. His family realizes he isn't the same as when he left but they can't seem to figure out how to connect with him.
Rose is a woman who is running from her past. She doesn't want anyone to realize what she has been through.
Both suffer from PTSD.
Iris Moreland does a wonderful job in developing these two troubled characters. She draws the reader into their individual nightmares. Letting you see how they are both trying to survive without bringing those they love into their dark world's.
I think these two characters of all the Thorntons stole my soul wI think their problems and the joy jnto finding someone who understands what you are going through even though they haven't suffered your pain.
I was given this book for an honest voluntary review.
